The
easy going nature of this adventure route will suit all level of
riders, with or without a passenger. The route is predominately
road orientated, with three tarred passes - Sir Lowries Pass, Franschhoek
Pass and Helshoogte Pass, and two gravel passes - Van der Stels
Pass and the Highlands Trail Pass.

Driving
Directions:
This pleasurable
167km dualsport day ride begins at the Lord Charles Hotel (-34.068141,18.822905)
on the R44 and Main Road in Somerset West.
Exit The BP Garage Lord Charles and turn left onto Main Road. Proceed
4.3km through the town of Somerset West and bear left at Vergelegen
Medi Clinic onto Sir Lowry's Pass Road.
We suggest this route because on weekends the N2 can be very congested.
From Medi Clinic travel 5.7km to the right hand turning over the
railway tracks - to Sir Lowry's Pass Village. Proceed slowly through
the village for 1.6km and to the T-Junction of the N2. Turn Left
to Sir Lowries Pass and travel 6.2km up over the pass the the view
point turning to the right.
After the view point turn right back onto the N2 and travel 10.8km
to the famous Peregrine Farm Stall on the right. This is a great
stop for fresh pastries.
Exit Peregrine Farm Stall and turn right onto the N2 - travel 230m
and turn right again to Viljoenhoop.
Travel 5.0km then turn left onto Highlands Road. Proceed a further
8.9km before the roads becomes gravel continue on the gravel (which
can be very loose in dry season) for another 10.3km until the T-Junction
of R44 to Kleinmond.
Turn left and proceed 320m to the T-Junction of R43 to Hermanus.
Travel 6.9km to the Botriver Junction - turn right towards Botriver
and proceed through the small settlement and cross the railway line
after 3.7km. Turn right onto gravel to Van der Stels Pass.
Travel 10.6km along the gravel pass to the skew Junction. Turn left
and travel another 12.1km then turn right towards Villiersdorp.
Proceed 3.6km to the T-Junction and turn left towards Villiersdorp
and Theewaterskloof Dam. Travel 2.6km to the Tar T-Junction of the
R321.
Turn right and travel 730m over the Theewaterskloof Dam to the Left
turning to Franschhoek. Travel 17.8km up the Franschhoek Pass to
the gravel view point turning to the right.
Exit the view point and turn right - travel 6.9km down the pass
and to the T-Junction of the R45 Main Road through town. Travel
800m to Café
Cacchio Pizzeria
From the restaurants turn right on the R45 Main Road and travel
14.6km out of Franschhoek to the Junction of the R310. Turn left
towards Stellenbosch. Travel 15.8km through Pniel and up over Helshoogte
Pass into Stellenbosch to the T-Junction of the R44 Adam Tas.
Turn left and travel 1.8km to the fork and bare left towards Somerset
West. Travel 16km on the R44 back to the Traffic lights at the Lord
Charles and Main Road.

Pass and then return passed Boschendal and over Helshoogte Pass
and along the R44 back to Somerset West
